Bulls Fighting

gary tompkins January 6, 2015

This picture has become a popular one and I have been asked why it isn't for sale, simple, even though all the elements have come together for this image, a good story, lighting, context, etc. there is one major problem—this image is heavily cropped. These elk were so far away from me that even at a full 300mm zoom (450mm equivalent) I had to crop out most of the picture to get what you see here and as such I can't "embiggen" it. I will work on it some more and see what else can be done but for now it remains a smaller image that I quite enjoy.

From the Simpsons—

"A noble spirit enbiggens  the smallest man"
- Jebediah Springfield

Edna Krabappel: "Embiggens"? I never heard that word before I came to Springfield.
Miss Hoover: I don't know why. It's a perfectly cromulent word.

Cabin In The Wilderness

gary tompkins December 19, 2014

The first few times I went to this meadow there were elk everywhere, the last few times with my camera, not a one. This corner of an old cabin overlooks one of the best views you can have. The remains of the old barn is to the right out of shot. I'll keep coming back to this spot at 11,000 feet in a Colorado wilderness until I catch the elk and/or bears that frequent this spot, hopefully with a wider angle lens wide enough to see both the cabin and the barn.

Cripple Creek Mining Works

gary tompkins December 12, 2014

A couple of old buildings and a mine head near Cripple Creek. Not pictured is the largest building on this site which I believe was the ore processing plant, I just couldn't get a good enough composition with all four structures.

I added noise in selected areas to this picture to give it a more painterly look which I quite like but would process the sky and clouds different now as you can see the telltale signs of HDR processing here. Turning the bottom of the cloud overly dark and the lighter hue of the sky just above the tree line. I may go back and redo this image at some point but I think it's a good study of someone learning the HDR technique, warts and all. Still an interesting picture. I love these old structures and wonder about the lives of the people who worked here.

a Single Bison

gary tompkins November 30, 2014

I have driven a couple times to this area trying to capture an image I saw about 6 years ago of a buffalo standing in the snow. I have yet to see what is in my mind but have come away with several images that I do like nonetheless.

Taking pictures of bison is a game of patience to get a good composition. Here I waited several hours for the herd to be in the right spot at the right time and caught this one by himself with snow still on him creating a unique look with the snow on the ground.

I'll keep returning to this area and someday, hopefully, will capture what's in my mind's eye.

Thom Hogan website

gary tompkins November 21, 2014

byThom.com is the main website from Thom Hogan, an excellent wildlife photographer who's been around the block a few times. Coming from the old school days of film Thom emphasizes technique and composition over gear.

There is a lot of helpful information for those wanting to improve themselves, one of his articles of particular interest to me is about tripods and can be found here.

Thom also has several other photography related websites that are more focused on certain gear such as dslrbodies.com (for the current state of dslr, especially Nikon), sans mirror.com(discussing trends in mirror less cameras), and a few others that might be of more interest to you.

If your are just getting started in photography or want to take your images to the next level I encourage you to explore his sites and dig through the wealth of information found there.
