Logo—perhaps

gary tompkins January 9, 2015

One night last month I got bored and started doodling on a logo design. Basically I wanted a logo but also something I could print on a t-shirt.

I had three "themes" I could mess around with:

1. focus on an animal like a nice buck or large bull elk. Two problems with this theme—it's a very common theme for wildlife/outdoor related logos and my photography doesn't only deal with wildlife but also old homesteads and vehicles like abandoned cars etc.

2. I could focus on the camera like one of those older large format film cameras. Problem: a bit cliché for a photography site.

3. Focus on me, the photographer, which is what I ended up doing. I also used a DSLR instead of the face so as to incorporate the photography.

Whenever you're dealing with a logo you have to keep in mind how it will look at one color for cheap printing when you need it but also how it looks very small, like on a business card or letterhead. It's okay to lose details at a small size but should still be recognizable as the logo. I think this works on both accounts and tells the story of my photography site.

Coming up with the tag line was pretty easy as I had been playing around with the words "wild things in wild places" as one of the original site name ideas. It fits even better as a tag line here.

I'm still debating if this logo will do but for now, I like it.
